OUR MISSION

Found Sound New Music Ensemble was created in 2018 by four intrepid music graduate students (Dana, Hollis, Molly, and Sam) at Western Michigan University. Through their interest in new music and their professional relationships with the composition students and faculty, they developed a mission: to facilitate the creation and performance of new music.

In the beginning, we worked with composition students at WMU, both undergraduate and graduate students, over the course of one semester per concert. The ensemble created a timeline for progress that included several meetings between the composer and the ensemble, and the works created were creative, collaborative, and tailored to the strengths of both the composers and the ensemble members.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the practical execution of ensemble playing has changed, but our goals remain the same. In 2019, we welcomed Carolyn and Ashley, on electronics and bassoon, to the Found Sound family. Two of our members are located in Illinois, two are Michigan, one in Indiana, and one in Pennsylvania, bringing new challenges to commissions, performances and rehearsals. Some of us are in school, some are working in music, some are working outside of music. We view our physical distance as an opportunity to challenge our perceptions of music, art, and community. We remain committed to vibrant creativity and excellence in art, and we look forward to the opportunity to continue sharing our passion with communities across the United States.
